自由。自らが由しとすること。
ながらくfreedomを自由と訳した福沢諭吉はおかしいと思っていたけど、今年ようやくなんとなく福沢諭吉が何故そういうふうにしたのか分かった。
もともと「自由」ということば自体が日本には存在せず、新しい概念を導入するにあたって苦心したんだと思う。
まあユビキタスを時空自在だっけ？にするよかいいセンス。惚れ直したぜ、諭吉さん。
